[Grand Finale Finalist: 1/18] Vishisht Bhatia – Rural BPOLiving Rise | March 20, 2012
“To me, Rise means to persevere, to rise above all...
Vishisht is defying the notion that if you migrate to a big city your life is just set—by providing BPO employment in rural India.
Tell us who you are.
Actually, I’m from Bijnor, it’s a small town in western Uttar Pradesh, and I studied until 10th in Bijnor. Then due to lack of higher education opportunities there, my father go us migrated to Delhi.
What is Rural BPO all about?
I wish to harness the latent rural talent, so that the overall growth is inclusive, and to provide them some good, decent, respectable employment opportunities.
How did you come up with this idea?
In the presence of some computer literate workforce, if I could bring in something that would help this kind of population, then it would be great. So going by the model of BPO, I thought there would be some very low-end work like data entry, like say customer response—work that does not require that kind of technical skill, that can be outsourced to rural India.
Reverse the migration trends, so that people take care of their ancestral land…to enhance financial inclusion, to provide employment at the bottom of pyramid.
What are the objectives of Rural BPO?
Reverse the migration trends, so that people take care of their ancestral land, take care of their parents. And to defy the notion that if you migrate to some big city your life is just set; to enhance financial inclusion, to provide employment at the bottom of pyramid.
What is your biggest challenge?
As they say, change is always uncomfortable, so people were quite skeptic in the beginning. They said ‘kuch nahi hone wala’ (this wont amount to anything), ‘kya pata kya hoga kya nahi hoga. Itna time lagaoge’ (what would happen? what would not?). They had their own fears, but I was quite sure because it was backed by Mahindra and they are someone of repute. So I always believed that this would go long term.
